On the 21st of September 2004, two events with what one might
characterize as opposite valence occurred. An international
Peace Vigil was to take place, with apparently hundreds of thousands of
participants around the world. At the same time, the continuing hurricane
season in the Carribean brought a heavy measure of tragedy to Haiti,
where at least 1000 people were reported dead from the effects. In both
cases, there was no moment of sharp focus (though vigil organizers
proposed a moment of silence at noon, local time). Therefore, the
specification for the event was for the full GMT day.
The analysis shows a very strong negative-going trend for most of the
day, and the Chisquare of 85786.620 on 86400 df corresponds to a Z of
-1.477 and p = 0.930.
